Custer State Park, SD

We had an awesome day of driving around Custer State Park LINK It adjoins Rushmore so we had to see it. We went during the middle of the day so our animal viewing was minimal. They have and amazing visitors center with a high tech, 18 minute movie about the park.

Basically there are 3 routes through the park with a huge diversity in landscape. We drove 73 miles in about 4 hours. Cost was $20 and the ticket is good for a month.

Fair warning: lots of pictures; hate to cull them; click to enlarge.

First up for us was Iron Mountain Road

Next up was Wildlife Loop Road

Buffalo!

We took a lunch break at Blue Bell Lodge. Wasn't expecting much but it was great. Robin did buffalo again.

The last loop may have been the best: Needles Hwy. Named for the amazing granite formations. Lots of pictures and we know you won't be that impressed. A camera cannot do it justice.
These are from a firetower at 6,000 ft. Gravel road up. Sketchy.

Best not bring the RV

Nope. No RV

Whew, what a great day. Robin says this may have been the best thing we have done, and that's saying a lot. Tomorrow is Sturgis!
