Nice ride from Rushmore to Buffalo, WY via Devil's Tower. 255 miles over 6 hours (including hour+ stop at Devil's Tower. We did not go to the base visitor's center because of the long line. It was 2.5 hours to the rock and another 2 hours to Buffalo.
- (For our info on future trips: We had been to Deadwood and Sturgis Sunday so we knew that way. I needed diesel. Custer has a Sinclair station with outlying pumps and building go around so we opted to go that way, plus we had already seen the other routes. Plus we don't like Interstates. Routing was US16, 85, 585 (at 4 corners), 14, and 24 to the rock. There was a long line at the entrance so we opted to just see it from the Trading Post lot. We then did 24, 14, 90 to Buffalo. ALL of the roads were excellent, many recently paved. Elevation changes (not many) were easy with a 40' towing. Light traffic. Beautiful scenery. We're glad we did the drive-by.)
We're staying at the Buffalo, WY KOA. Pricey at $58/night but is a nice park.
Stopping in Buffalo was purely because it was half way to Cody. Lucky break because this is an awesome little town with amazing people. Every one was so nice and helpful. We started with lunch at the Sagewood and then walked around town.
Turns out this weekend was the annual Longmire Days celebration! We'd never seen the programbut watched the 1st show tonight. The cast comes every year and the town goes from about 2K to 10K.
There is a cotton mill in town that offers tours. I've always wanted to see a mill after hearing Robin talking about working in one (this one was much nicer she says).
The best thing about Buffalo: Celia! (Alas, no picture)
Bruno tore his equivalent of a human ACL and this makes it reall hard to get him in the coach since he weighs about 120#. We bought a sling from Amazon but it would not fit him. We were told that Celia at B&L Upholstery could help us. Her shop is out of town in the prairie surrounded bu sheep. She's a sheep farmer too! She probably weighs less than Robin but she is tough! She took a look at the sling and fixed it beautifully. She said no charge but we disagreed. The best part was we chatted about life in Buffalo for an hour or so. What stories she has. We went back for a minor adjustment and ended up talking even more. Later another lady in town said.we were so lucky to talk with her because she is living history.
For next year we were going to Canada. We've now decided to come West again and spend some more time in Buffalo and other neat places. It is so beautiful and interesting here with great people.
But, we'll be long gone before winter comes...it gets cold in Sept!
